This book presents an accessible accoutn of the nature of the hazards presented by ionizing radiation and the methods of protection for those new to the field, and for the non-specialist. It takes the reader through the general background to the subject, the technical principles underlyign the control of radiation hazards, the biological effects of radiation, and radiation detection and measurement. These are followed by a consideration of more specialized topics including radiation protection in the nuclear power industry and in medicine, radioactive waste managemnt and radiological emergencies. Two new chapters have been added for this fifth edition reflecting the evolution of the subject in recent years-‘Hazard and risk management’ and ‘Health physics in cleanup and decommissioning’-both areas of considerable current interest. The authors have also addressed the issue of interationality to ensure that hte content remains appropriate for those working in these industries outside the UK, particularly in Europe which, given current EU strategies, should provide a growing market for the book.
